Vegan Options at Food on the Fly

Food on the Fly is a fast casual Korean- and Midwest-inspired spot in downtown Minneapolis. They’re open Monday through Friday from 11am-2pm. I know that means they’re not readily accessible to everyone, but if you get the chance to try them, don’t pass them up! They make vegan meats in-house, including chicken, pulled pork, beer brats, and pastrami.

Vegan Chicken Sandwich

The vegan Chicken Sandwich was the highlight of the three items I tried. It features vegan chicken with a gochujang glaze, citrus cabbage, pickled daikon, and gochujang mayo. The spice level was just right for me, and it’s balanced perfectly with the cabbage and pickled daikon. I would eat this sandwich again any day of the week.

Vegan Pastrami Rice Bowl

The Pastrami Bowl features jasmine rice, seasonal vegetables and pickles, vegan pastrami, gochujang mustard, and soy ginger aioli. My bowl had edamame, shredded beets, bean sprouts, cucumbers and more. While the pastrami is made well, I actually think I would have preferred the bowl without any plant-based meat. It was fresh and tasty, and for me, the pastrami weighed everything down.

Chips & Seoul-sa

The Seoul-sa says it includes tomato, gochujang, smoked peppers, onion, and cilantro, but I wouldn’t have guessed it had gochujang. It tasted more like a mild pico de gallo. On the other hand, the kimchi crackers are addictive! They’re firm but soft with just the right amount of seasoning. I would buy a bucket of these crackers if I could.

Food on the Fly is participating in the Twin Cities Vegan Chef Challenge, which takes place throughout August. Restaurants from around the Twin Cities offer a special vegan dish, and you can rate each dish you try. The winner is announced at Twin Cities Veg Fest on September 21 on Harriet Island.
