Vegan Ice Cream in the Twin Cities
The Twin Cities has many vegan ice cream options at locally owned shops, so make sure to check them all out.
Bebe Zito
Bebe Zito has multiple locations: two in Minneapolis and one in Woodbury. Their vegan options rotate, but their Marvelous Mrs Hazel is far and away my favorite ice cream in existence.
Milkjam Creamery
Milkjam Creamery offers multiple vegan ice cream options, and it’s delicious! Find them next to World Street Kitchen in Uptown (you can even walk between the two without going outside). Their Black and PB vs Everybody flavors are both creamy and flavorful. They also have monthly themed specials and always have one that’s vegan.
Sebastian Joe's
Sebastian Joe’s has three locations in Minneapolis, and they’re known for their fun, creative dairy ice cream flavors. Lately I’ve noticed they’ve been a little hit or miss when it comes to vegan ice cream options. I most recently visited the Kingfield location, and they had a chocolate Oreo ice cream that was on the icy side. This was the only vegan option aside from a sorbet.
Nellie’s Ice Cream
Nellie's Ice Cream in St. Paul offers a "rotating vegan flavor," and on the day I visited, it happened to be dark chocolate with a coconut milk base. I asked about vegan cones, and the employee said the dark chocolate cone is vegan. Two huge scoops with the cone was $5.75 (cash only!), so the prices are very reasonable. And the ice cream is creamy and rich; two of us couldn't even finish it in one sitting. Note that one of their signature things is to top your ice cream with a mini cookie, so you may have to remind them to hold off.
Note: I haven’t visited Nellie’s in a while so this information may not be accurate.
MN Nice Cream
MN Nice Cream started as a food truck, though they never appear to offer vegan ice cream when they take it to events. So you can visit their brick and mortar locations in NE Minneapolis and Stillwater. They have vegan soft serve with several fun and creative toppings options.
Minnehaha Scoop
Minnehaha Scoop in south Minneapolis offers oat-based dairy-free ice cream with rotating flavors. I tried both the Vanilla Chocolate Chip and Oreo. They purchase from Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream and you can view the list of ingredients on their website.
Note: I haven’t visited Minnehaha Scoop in a while so this information may not be accurate.
Cold Front
Speaking of Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream, Cold Front in St Paul also carries this brand. They had Oreo oat when I visited, and they had some sorbet flavors available. They’re also a coffee shop offering oat and almond milk.
J. Selby's
While they’re not an ice cream shop, I’d be remiss not to mention St. Paul’s J. Selby’s, an all vegan restaurant offering Frostbites (think: DQ Blizzard) and shakes with a variety of mix-ins and toppings. My favorite is the PB Cup Frostbite, pictured above.
Fletcher’s
The first time I stopped by Fletcher’s Ice Cream in northeast Minneapolis, they only had sorbet, but the second time around was a success. I tried both their Coffee Chip and Cookie Butter flavors, and I loved both.
Wonders Ice Cream
Wonders Ice Cream has several locations around the Twin Cities and can make almost any flavor vegan. Their rolled ice cream is a fun change from your typical scoop and therefore a good one for the gram. I got chocolate and peanut butter, and unfortunately they were both pretty weak. The ingredients seem fairly low quality, so unfortunately I don’t recommend them.
Note: I haven’t visited Wonders in a while so this information may not be accurate.
Pumphouse Creamery
I’ve tried Pumphouse Creamery in south Minneapolis a couple times, and their ice cream is too icy for me.
