Eating Plant Based at The Howe

The Howe in south Minneapolis offers a few plant based dishes on their menu. You can also find options at their sister restaurants, Stanley’s and Pub 819.

The Howe is in south Minneapolis and offers several plant based options, including dessert. Its sister restaurants are Stanley’s Northeast Bar Room in northeast Minneapolis and Pub 819 in Hopkins, and you’ll find some similar dishes across their menus. They all also offer a dog-friendly “paw-tio” along with a dog-friendly menu.

At The Howe, you can get vegan tacos with jackfruit, chorizo, or (my favorite) Korean ribs. The ribs are from The Herbivorous Butcher, and you can also enjoy them on a BBQ sandwich. The chipotle mayo adds a nice, spicy contrast to the sweetness of the ribs. I also like how finely they slice the ribs because I find them too dense at times.

They have a Thai Curry Bowl that includes tofu, green curry, peppers, peanuts, kale, Brussels sprouts, and herbs over coconut rice. I haven’t tried it, but it sounds like a light, flavorful plant based dish.

All three locations also include the Impossible Burger on their menu. They prepare it as an All American burger with vegan thousand island dressing, cheese, lettuce, onions, and pickles. Mine was overcooked and therefore on the dry side, so I mentioned it to our server. Otherwise, the flavor was good, and it was incredibly filling. The best time to go to any of the three locations for the Impossible Burger is on Monday when burgers are $5 off with the purchase of a drink (soda is fine).

All three restaurants have “vegan chocolate cheesecake” listed on their dessert menu, though this is definitely not cheesecake. It’s a decadent chocolate cake, and I’m not quite sure what to call the top layer because it’s not frosting, but it’s more chocolate goodness whatever it is. The cake is perfect for two people and will satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth.

Our server was attentive and all around awesome. I’m grateful they were open on December 24 since tons of places were closed because of the holiday and also because it was a Monday. I will happily return to The Howe to give them my business again. Have you been? I’d love to hear about what you’ve had there, so please feel free to drop a comment below.

  1. The Kung Pao tofu bowl at Pub 819 is AWESOME! Their pretzel sticks are vegan, but ask for a side of their vegan thousand island to dip them in instead of cheese.
